Worcestershire Highways wins Collaboration Award at CIHT Awards 2018

Worcestershire Highways – a partnership which includes Ringway Worcestershire – has won a prestigious Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) Award after the judges hailed its outstanding collaborative approach. Ringway Worcestershire, working in partnership with Worcestershire County Council (WCC) as Worcestershire Highways Term Maintenance Contract, was named winner of the CIHT Collaboration Award during a gala dinner at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London on 14th June.

David Rowley, Ringway Regional Director, said: “Our entry plots the time line and the development of the collaboration from its inception in 2005, through the LEAN processes which assisted the harmonisation, to the contract re-award to Ringway in 2014, while also successfully gaining accreditation to ISO 44001 for Collaborative Business Relationship Management Systems in March 2017.

“Both Worcestershire County Council and Ringway Infrastructure Services consider the Worcestershire Highways Partnership a fine example of what can be achieved by working together rather than wasting time and effort through an adversarial contractual approach.

“Ringway and WCC have developed shared common goals which has promoted a healthy working environment that delivers efficiency, value and a quality service for the local community and economy.”

Sue Percy, CIHT Chief Executive, said: “Worcestershire Highways headed an impressive set of entries that demonstrate how collaboration has become widespread in the sector. The Worcestershire Highways Collaboration clearly demonstrated how an effective partnership had built over time, was made to work and how these synergies had led to improved outcomes.”

The CIHT Awards are a celebration of the great work undertaken throughout the highways and transportation industry, rewarding the achievements of those working in the sector and to promote their professionalism as best practice to a wider industry audience.

Ringway Hounslow Highways was Highly Commended in the Asset Management category after building on the success of achieving ISO 55001. Ringway Hounslow Highways has been in an innovative partnership within the London Borough of Hounslow since the beginning of 2013, delivering all highway management services, including a significant investment programme to improve the Borough’s highways, footways, lighting and structures assets, under a progressive and pro-active asset management strategy.

Rob Gillespie, Ringway Regional Director, said: “Our approach has ensured that cost-effective future maintainability has been built in to all of the improvement and maintenance works that we do. This is based on understanding the highways network and how it delivers together with the asset inventory that we manage and how it behaves. This ensures that materials and techniques that are chosen are sympathetic to the local environment for the long-term future.

“This joined-up approach to managing the highways network in the Borough, along with improving interfaces with Transport for London and Highways England, has taken this challenging highway management service within Hounslow from being close to the bottom of the league table in terms of highway performance and street cleanliness in London, to one of the top Boroughs. And it won’t stop there; a rigorous focus on delivering better services should result in further improvements to come across the London Borough of Hounslow.

“I’m thrilled this fantastic improvement has been recognised through our winning CIHT Award entry.”

Ringway North Yorkshire also received recognition when it was Commended in the Collaboration Award category, along with their partners Eurovia Specialist Treatments and North Yorkshire County Council.

With more than 9,000km of road network, North Yorkshire has the longest road network of any highway authority in the country. The entry was Commended for outstanding teamwork which led to a successful and efficient surface dressing programme on the Local Access Road between Leeming and Ripon that helped significantly cut disruption to motorists.

The judges said: “A well-presented entry that focussed on a specific project to highlight the widespread benefits that collaboration has achieved. The high level of community engagement was noted in the judging.”

John Nicholson, Ringway Regional Director, said: “Utilising traditional techniques and equipment, a site of this size would take around two weeks to complete using conventional Convoy Working Traffic Control. However, with the use of Eurovia Specialist Treatments’ ‘state-of-the-art’ Etnyre machine, the job was completed in just two days over one weekend in July last year.

“We take pride in the relationships we build with our clients and our partners to ensure a high-quality job is carried out in a timely manner. I am delighted that the judges have recognised this approach.”

Mike Notman, Managing Director of Ringway Term Services, said: “Ringway teams have continued to deliver outstanding work in collaboration with our clients across a wide range of projects. I am delighted that these teams have received this well-deserved external recognition through success at the CIHT Awards.”
